A godly man, as portrayed in the Bible, is a man who walks in faith, obedience, love, and service, reflecting the character of God. His life is grounded in a deep relationship with God and an unwavering commitment to His will.

Old Testament Perspective:

In the Old Testament, a godly man is defined by his faith in God (Abraham), obedience to His commands (Moses), and pursuit of moral integrity (Joseph). He embodies justice and compassion (Micah 6:8), demonstrates spiritual leadership (Joshua), and is devoted to teaching God’s Word to his family and community (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). Holiness is a key theme, with godly men striving to live set apart for God’s purposes (Leviticus 19:2). These men are expected to love and fear the Lord, remain faithful to His covenant, and care for the vulnerable in society, such as widows, orphans, and the poor (Isaiah 1:17).

New Testament Perspective:

In the New Testament, the model of a godly man is perfected in the life of Jesus Christ. A godly man is called to imitate Christ’s humility, sacrificial love, and servant-hearted leadership (Philippians 2:5–8; Ephesians 5:25–28). His life is marked by the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). He boldly proclaims the Gospel and endures hardship for Christ’s sake, as seen in the life of the Apostle Paul (2 Timothy 4:6–8). Furthermore, a godly man demonstrates faithful stewardship of his resources and responsibilities, and he leads his family and community with wisdom and integrity (1 Timothy 3:4–5; 1 Corinthians 4:2). Holiness remains central, with men being called to live above reproach as examples to others (1 Peter 1:15–16).

Whole-Bible View:

What is a Man of God? Is he portrayed differently in the Old and New Testament?

Across both the Old and New Testaments, a godly man is consistently depicted as one who reflects God’s character in every aspect of life. He is a man of faith, who trusts in God’s promises and relies on His strength. Like Abraham, he believes in God’s faithfulness; like David, he seeks God through prayer and repentance; and like Paul, he demonstrates unwavering commitment to Christ’s mission.

A godly man pursues obedience to God’s Word, whether it be the Law given to Israel or the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. He is motivated by love—love for God and love for others—and his relationships are characterised by selflessness and sacrifice, as exemplified by Christ Himself. Holiness is a defining quality, with godly men striving to live set apart from sin and dedicated to God’s purposes.

Justice and compassion are also integral traits. A godly man seeks to uphold fairness and care for the marginalised, mirroring God’s concern for the vulnerable. He is a leader who takes responsibility for the spiritual well-being of his family and community, teaching and guiding others to walk in God’s ways.

God’s ultimate expectation for men is summarised in the two great commandments: to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and strength (Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37) and to love their neighbour as themselves (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:39). From Genesis to Revelation, a godly man is one who walks humbly with God, seeks His kingdom above all else, and lives as a light in a world darkened by sin. Through faith, obedience, and Christlike character, he fulfils God’s purposes and brings glory to His name.
